Eyewear Fashion - Fall 2017

The buyers from our office just returned from Vision Expo West in Las Vegas, where some of the world's most fashionable eyewear designers unveiled their newest collections.  We fell in love with a few new lines that we will be bringing into our office and really noticed some new trends for the patient who likes to be fashion-forward!  (Stay tuned to our Facebook page over the next week as we unveil some new finds!)

TREND #1 - ROUND SHAPE

Round is vogue for eyewear and the person who wants to be wearing the latest trendy shape in fashion for eyeglasses and sunglasses will rush out and buy a pair of round specs!  The size ranges from the tiny "John Lennon" size round to the oversized movie-star glam.  We noticed round shapes made of classic tortoise, plated titanium in many colors, and many variations with acetate.

TREND #2 - DOUBLE BRIDGE

A double bridge is the hottest accompaniment to any shape, including the trendy round.  We noticed that the double bridge is taking many forms from the 1980's classic to edgier extended and shaped double bridges.  One thing for sure, if you like to set the trends, find your favorite shape in eyeglass frames and throw in a double bridge!

TREND #3 - MIRROR FLASH COATING

You've seen your favorite movie star wearing colorful mirror sunglasses and that is another of this year's biggest trend.  Unlike the classic mirror lens, the flash coating allows you to see the wearer's eyes through the sunglass.  The flash coating comes in many color variations from solid, to gradient, to rainbow.  From conservative to flashy, there is a flash mirror coat for everyone! (We highly recommend getting an anti-reflective coat on the back side of the sunglasses, especially when you have a mirror coat.

TREND #4 - MIXED MEDIA

We've seen it creeping into the fashion scene for a while now, but the frame that combines multiple materials and textures is bigger now than ever.  We love the designers who have figured out a way to combine a light-weight titanium with a light-weight acetate to create a masterpiece eyewear.  We're also seeing acetate fronts with metal sides, and metal fronts with acetate sides. Layers and combinations of materials set your face apart from the rest.  

TREND #5 - COLORED LENSES

You might have noticed recently that models appear to be wearing lightly tinted colorful lenses.  This is another new trend we noticed this fall.  These tinted lenses aren't worn as much for blocking the brightness of the sun, as they are for making a fashion statement. The colors and intensity seem endless. The "blush" of color lets people know you are fashion forward!






TREND #6 - CRYSTAL

Crystal frames started emerging on the fashion several years ago, but now they have arrived in a very big way!  For those special people who could rock the true crystal, great for you!  I've seen you walking down the street and you look amazing!!  For those who couldn't "pull it off,"  more frame lines have introduced crystal with a slight tint of color.  We have seen slight grey crystal, soft pink blush and soft champagne to name a few.  We also noticed the use of crystal components either in the frame face or temple, for just a touch of the trendy material. Now the "crystals" are available to a much larger demographic of eyewear lovers!

Driving presents a challenge to eyeglass wearers, specifically the need to switch to prescription sunglasses on a sunny summer day.  Purchasing a high quality sunglass lens, with a high quality anti-reflective coating, is just as important as having a premium eyeglass lens.  While driving, you will need to move your head a lot and focus on both the near objects on the dashboard, as well as the distant objects while driving.  You will also need every tool possible to avoid the sun’s glare and the danger it causes.

Many people leave their sunglasses in the car all of the time, as that is where they are most likely to be used.  This presents a unique challenge in warm climates, because many lens coatings can sometimes crack or peel when exposed to the harsh temperatures inside your car on a hot summer day.  At Memphis Family Vision, we urge our patients to take advantage of the highest quality lens coatings we offer, as they are less likely to crack or peel when exposed to the high heat inside your “oven on wheels.”

With new FSA funds available, it is the perfect time to start shopping for stylish new eyewear for 2015.  Since this topic can be confusing, we have found this list, originally published in the Focus Blog, to help you understand your benefits if you have Flex Spending or Health Savings Accounts. Memphis Family Vision and SEE Main Street have a great selection of eyeglasses and sunglasses to help you express your personal style.  Our insurance department can help you with questions regarding your benefits.

Flex Spending Account Facts:

·       All of your FSA funds for the entire year are available January 1st.

·       FSA funds usually expire at the end of each calendar year.

·       You may be able to carry $500 of unused FSA funds from the previous year depending on your employer.

Health Savings Account Facts:

·       HSA funds are accrued throughout the calendar year.

·       HSA dollars never expire and will remain in your account until they are used.

·       lf you don’t use your HSA funds in a given year, the unspent money will roll over into your account for next year.

HSA/FSA Facts Relating to Eye Care:

·       FSA/HSA funds can be used towards your eye health visits and to purchase prescription eyewear, eyeglass frames, prescription sunglasses, sunglasses (only if medically necessary and prescribed by a physician), contact lenses and related cleaning/storage solutions and low vision aids.

·       FSA/HSA funds can be used whether you have vision insurance or not.

Protecting Your Eyes from Ultra-Violet Light

Everyone has been told to wear sunscreen to protect their skin from exposure to the sun's harmful ultraviolet light, but did you know that you also need to protect your eyes as well?  

Sunglasses aren't just a fashion statement; they shield your eyes from ultraviolet radiation that comes from the sun, even on cloudy days.  Long term exposure can lead to eye diseases, such as cataracts and macular degeneration.  

It is not clear how much exposure to solar radiation will cause damage, so the American Optometric Association recommends wearing quality sunglasses that offer  both UV-A and UV-B protection, and wearing a hat or cap with a wide brim whenever you spend time outside.  If you spend a lot of time outdoors in bright sunlight, wrap around frames (which are now available with prescription lenses) can provide additional protection from the sun's harmful rays.

It is also very important to remember to provide protection for your children and teenagers. They typically spend more time in the sun than adults.  

There are other opportunities to protect your eyes from UV radiation.  A clear coating can be applied to prescription eyeglasses that will also safeguard your eyes from the harmful rays.  In addition, many contact lenses now are available with UV protection.

Every year there are new advances in ultraviolet protection for your eyes.  When you come to our office for your eye exam, make sure you ask one of our doctors or opticians what would work best for your individual needs.

Hot Trends in Eyewear for Men

What are the latest fashion trends in eyewear for men?

Nothing makes a man feel more “cool” than wearing the perfect pair of sunglasses!  The most up-to-date and fashionable men’s sunglasses take classic designs and make them bolder, using strong colors and thicker frames.  Matte finishes are the latest trend to show up for men.  Camo prints are also very popular.  Get ready men, you will soon be seeing the newest aviators coming out with the retro double bar nose piece!

Your choice in sunglasses can even enhance your performance while playing your favorite sport. With lenses that are specially designed for fishermen, golfers, and tennis players you will be able to look stylish while also eliminating glare so you can perform your best!

If you are interested in wearing the cutting edge style in ophthalmic eyewear, you should consider selecting a pair of geek chic eyeglasses in a matte finish.  Natural materials are also huge this year, with wood, bamboo, and other organic materials being incorporated into eyewear. Crystal clear plastic frames are also showing up on the faces of very stylish men. Even rimless glasses have an edge with their “cool” temple designs.

Hot Trends in Eyewear for Women

What are the latest fashion trends in eyewear for women?

Big is back in ophthalmic eyewear!  Larger eyeglasses have been coming on the scene over the past year or so.  This is not your 1980’s big, however, as many of the newest frames we are seeing are works of art for the face. Think combinations of plastic and metal in one frame.  Add lots of color, especially greens and turquoise.  Try a little whimsy with a touch of animal print. And, of course, don’t forget to add your “bling” and lots of detail on the temples. 

For a more simple, professional look, the well-dressed woman is selecting a “geek chic” frame made especially for women.  Unlike their masculine counterpart, a woman’s geek chic eyeglass will have a softer curve, an arching brow line, and flattering colors and finishes to compliment a woman’s complexion.

While eyeglasses are going larger, sunglasses for women are getting smaller.  The “oversized frame” is giving way to a medium frame.  We are still seeing fun colors and interesting details on the temples.  Organic materials are showing up on all eyewear as our country embraces the idea of “going green.”

Eyewear is “jewelry” that you wear every day.  It is the first thing that people see when they look at your face.  Selecting eyewear is your opportunity to make a statement and let your personality shine through.  Build your eyewear “wardrobe” so that you have different frames to match your mood, or your outfit!

Dr. Eisenstatt Board Certified by American Board of Optometry

One of 1700 ODs to Achieve ABO Board Certification

ST. LOUIS, Mo., November 7, 2013― Dr. Gerald Eisenstatt has joined a growing community
of optometrists in the nation by becoming board certified by the American Board of Optometry
(ABO). Dr. Eisenstatt passed the ABO’s Board Certification Examination administered in July
2013.

To attain this honor, Dr. Eisenstatt completed a series of rigorous post-graduate activities.
He then passed a challenging computer based examination on issues spanning the scope of
practice of optometry. This achievement earned Dr. Eisenstatt the title of Diplomate, American
Board of Optometry.

Dr. Eisenstatt has enrolled in the ABO’s Maintenance of Certification program. The ten-year
maintenance of certification process is designed to allow the doctor of optometry to demonstrate
that he is dedicated to keeping current in the field of optometry and delivering quality patient
care.

“We extend congratulations to the group of optometrists who have taken this important step in
demonstrating their commitment to lifelong learning,” said Paul C. Ajamian, O.D., ABO chairman
of the board.

High Eye Pressures During Yearly Exam

Screening for glaucoma with the OCT is a procedure that can be performed at
Memphis Family Vision in East Memphis.  

G.W. asked what does it mean if my eye pressures are high during my yearly vision examination?

G.W. …..that is very good question. Every patient over the age of 18 should have eye pressures checked to screen for glaucoma during the yearly eye exam. Some times the results of the glaucoma screening are out of the normal range. If this happens, the doctor may recommend that a glaucoma-suspect evaluation be performed. This will include dilating the eyes to provide a more detailed look at the optic nerve, photographing the internal structures of the eye, a visual field evaluation which checks the side vision and an Ocular Coherence Tomography (OCT) which measures the thickness of the nerve fibers and compares them to age related data gathered from years of research.

The doctor will use this information to determine if you have glaucoma. If so, then many times eye drops will be prescribed to lower the pressure. If it is determined that you do not have glaucoma, then observation may be recommended.

Glaucoma is a very controllable disease, if caught early. An eye pressure screening is just one of the many tests used to determine if a patient has glaucoma. Thanks for asking such an important question; our number one goal is protecting our patient’s visual health.
