With new FSA funds available, it is the perfect time to start shopping for stylish new eyewear for 2015.  Since this topic can be confusing, we have found this list, originally published in the Focus Blog, to help you understand your benefits if you have Flex Spending or Health Savings Accounts. Memphis Family Vision and SEE Main Street have a great selection of eyeglasses and sunglasses to help you express your personal style.  Our insurance department can help you with questions regarding your benefits.

Flex Spending Account Facts:

·       All of your FSA funds for the entire year are available January 1st.

·       FSA funds usually expire at the end of each calendar year.

·       You may be able to carry $500 of unused FSA funds from the previous year depending on your employer.

Health Savings Account Facts:

·       HSA funds are accrued throughout the calendar year.

·       HSA dollars never expire and will remain in your account until they are used.

·       lf you don’t use your HSA funds in a given year, the unspent money will roll over into your account for next year.

HSA/FSA Facts Relating to Eye Care:

·       FSA/HSA funds can be used towards your eye health visits and to purchase prescription eyewear, eyeglass frames, prescription sunglasses, sunglasses (only if medically necessary and prescribed by a physician), contact lenses and related cleaning/storage solutions and low vision aids.

·       FSA/HSA funds can be used whether you have vision insurance or not.

Hot off the Press: The Bausch + Lomb Ultra Contact Lens!

The newest silicone hydrogel contact lens available on the market has been rolled out by Bausch + Lomb and we have it at Memphis Family Vision and SEE Main Street! The Bausch + Lomb Ultra lens is a monthly replacement, super moist, high oxygen transmission contact lens. According to Bausch + Lomb, "the new lens technology, which has been studied and developed for seven years, combines a breakthrough material with new manufacturing processes to produce a contact lens that breaks the cycle of discomfort for unsurpassed comfort and vision all day."

Who might be a good candidate for the Bausch + Lomb Ultra contact lens?

Optometrists have noticed that many patients are spending more than 10 hours each day using digital devices. We know that it is critical to surpass current standards for comfort, vision, and eye health.  The B+L Ultra lens seems to fit the bill.

Dr. Greg Usdan notes, "This lens is a great option for patients with dry eyes, or patients who have dropped out of contact lens wear due to dryness.  The lens is super easy to handle and has a light blue visibility tint so it can be easily seen for insertion." It is currently available only for single vision patients powers from +2.00 to  -9.00, but will be available in extended powers within 90 days.  

This lens has the absolute highest oxygen transmission of any soft lens available today, and also has the new B&L MoistureSeal technology built in, giving it all day comfort and exceptional vision.  

Where can I get this new lens?

The doctors at the Memphis Family Vision Practice are the first office in town to have this lens and will be the only place to get this lens for the near future.  Dr. Usdan has already begun wearing the Bausch + Lomb Ultra contact lens and has been very pleased so far!

Bifocal Contact Lenses

I have heard a lot about bifocal contact lenses. What kind of vision should I expect from this type of lens?

That is a question I get asked almost every day. As more and more patients reach presbyopia (the need for reading glasses or bifocals after the age of 40), they want the freedom of good vision without having to wear glasses. Bifocal (or multifocal) contact lenses may provide satisfactory vision for many people.

Many of my patients wear bifocal contact lenses and do very well. 

The most important thing for a patient to understand is the limitations of bifocal contacts. Often the vision is satisfactory, but may not be perfect. Every patient has a their own tolerance of visual acuity. It all depends on the motivation and visual acceptance of the contact lens wearer.

The best way to determine if bifocal contacts are right for you is to schedule an appointment with the office and try a pair. We will be glad to discuss and evaluate these lenses, as well as all types of contact lenses, to ascertain which visual correction is the best for your eyes.

High Eye Pressures During Yearly Exam

Screening for glaucoma with the OCT is a procedure that can be performed at
Memphis Family Vision in East Memphis.  

G.W. asked what does it mean if my eye pressures are high during my yearly vision examination?

G.W. …..that is very good question. Every patient over the age of 18 should have eye pressures checked to screen for glaucoma during the yearly eye exam. Some times the results of the glaucoma screening are out of the normal range. If this happens, the doctor may recommend that a glaucoma-suspect evaluation be performed. This will include dilating the eyes to provide a more detailed look at the optic nerve, photographing the internal structures of the eye, a visual field evaluation which checks the side vision and an Ocular Coherence Tomography (OCT) which measures the thickness of the nerve fibers and compares them to age related data gathered from years of research.

The doctor will use this information to determine if you have glaucoma. If so, then many times eye drops will be prescribed to lower the pressure. If it is determined that you do not have glaucoma, then observation may be recommended.

Glaucoma is a very controllable disease, if caught early. An eye pressure screening is just one of the many tests used to determine if a patient has glaucoma. Thanks for asking such an important question; our number one goal is protecting our patient’s visual health.
